China is one of the most promising growth markets in the world – including for Bertelsmann. Founded in 2008, the Bertelsmann Asia Investments Fund (BAI) is an evidence of the Corporate’s long-term commitment to China. BAI focuses on consumption upgrade, social media & content, China based global companies, tech & infrastructure and finance. BAI has invested in more than 100 startups so far, of which about 7 companies are listed on different exchanges and many have achieved the status of a "Unicorn".
The Bertelsmann Brazil Investments (BBI) investment platform pools the Group’s activities in the strategic growth region of Brazil. Specifically, Bertelsmann owns stakes in several funds via BBI, including Bozano Educational 2, which has a target endowment of 800 million Brazilian real (approx. €230 million) for investments in the field of medical education. Bertelsmann's partner in this fund is the renowned Brazilian investment company Crescera Investimentos. The Group also makes direct investments in the South American country: In 2015, Bertelsmann acquired a stake in Affero Lab, the Brazilian market leader for corporate training. Since April 2018 Bertelsmann is the majority shareholder.
Bertelsmann India Investments (BII) focuses its holdings on the digital, education, media and services sectors. The fund's investments include the furnishing portal Pepperfry and the e-commerce enabler Kartroket. In the field of higher education, BII invested among others in the training company Eruditus Executive Education and the education provider iNurture. Investments also exist in three funds of funds: Kaizen Private Equity, Helion Venture Partners and the Nirvana Fund.
BDMI is a venture capital fund that specifically invests in innovative and emerging digital media companies in the United States. BDMI supports startups in their networking with Bertelsmann's divisions and growing into successful players in the digital media landscape through collaborations. The BDMI portfolio comprises more than 60 investments, including startups such as the next-generation publisher Clique Media, the e-commerce company Food52, and the online video marketer Jukin Media.
